Under an hour flight from the island of Tahiti or Moorea, the island of Bora Bora, with a lagoon resembling an artist's palette of blues and greens, is love at first sight. Climate
The climate in Bora Bora and the surrounding islands are considered to be tropical. Like with most places the seasons can be divided into two seasons: the wet season and the dry season. The wet season runs from November till April with an average run fall of 3/4ths of the yearly precipitation. During these times the humidity levels can be at an all time high. The storms during these months are frequent and unpredictable. The rainfall is about 1800mm or 71 inches! And the weather is 30 degree Celsius. The dry season running from May to October, this is when tourism is at its peak on the island. During these months the temperature is a few degrees lower and rain is rare. The best time weather wise with the least risk of storms is in their winter months. The very best part about the weather in Bora Bora is that the water temperature hovers in the mid 80's (30C) on average. Shopping
Most of the shopping can be found in little shopping centers along the island's encircling road. Many hotels also have their own stores and boutiques. There are also a number of art galleries and working studios, and a fine collection of local crafts. Of course the most popular purchase are famous Black Pearls. Renowned for their quality, these beauties can be found at several shops around the island.
Pearls can be found at Nyco's in the main village of Vaitape, you can choose from their extensive selection of loose pearls and an array of settings, or create your own, they have jewelers on site. The salespeople speak perfect english and friendly and professional. Nyco's also offers free transportation to the village and back to your hotel. Moana Arts and Pearls (The Bora Pearl company), plus a selection of wood cravings and photographs by Erwin Christian, who settled the islands in the 1960s. Make sure to visit The Farm and the Bora Pearl Company where you can tour and learn about pearl cultivating from the company that started it all on Bora Bora Boutique Gauquin also offers black pearls, in addition to handcrafts, clothing, and curio items. And Botique Bora Bora leans more toward t-shirts, books, calendars and curios.
Located in the main village of Vaitape are two new stores really worth the visit. La Galerie with specializes in unique wood carvings, original art, pottery, home decoration, jewelry, and gifts, Fashion Bora Bora is the newest and nicest place to purchase ladies and mens resort wear, t-shirts, swimwear, sandals, bags, hats and more.
The oldest and largest art gallery is Galerie D'Art Linda, which features fine artists from around the Polynesian islands. The gallery is filled with painting, sculptures, bronzes, etchings, pottery and lithographs.
Alain Despert Studio is located high on the hill overlooking Matira Beach. He is the most famous artist in French Polynesian. Most known as one of the original Absolut artists. His work is colorful and contemporary. Studio visits are By Private Appointment Only, so check with your concierge to make arrangements.
